Final Qualifications Determined for Olympic Trampoline

Final qualifications have been determined and 32 tickets awarded for participation in Men’s and Women’s individual Olympic Trampoline events at this year’s summer games in Beijing.

Qualifications for Trampoline Events
The National Olympic Committee has developed a strict set of criteria for Olympic Trampoline qualification to ensure the widest international representation of the best gymnastic talent.
16 men and 16 women are eligible to participate in the Olympic Trampoline events according to their federation’s participation and ranking in the Trampoline World Championships qualifying event held in the year preceding the Olympic Games.

With 32 total places to fill, a maximum of 2 gymnasts per federation is allowed for places 1-8 and 1 per federation for slots 9-13 to ensure that at least 12 countries will be represented at the competing Olympic events. Places 14 and 15 are nominated by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG) in conjunction with the Trampoline Technical Committee to ensure that:

• The host country is represented by at least one qualifying man or woman
• At least 4 continents are represented at the Olympic Games
• Consideration is given for unforeseen or extenuating circumstances

Place 16 is considered a wild card, as one invitation is reserved for the IOC Tripartite Commission for either men or women. The place or places not used by the Commission will be awarded according to the same criteria as places 9-13 in order to improve the number of individual gymnasts from federations not yet represented at the Olympic Games.

US Trampolinists Qualify to Compete in Beijing
The United States has fulfilled its obligation for Olympic Trampoline qualification and will be sending representatives to Beijing for both the Men’s and Women’s divisions. Trampolinist Chris Estrada came in 24th in Men’s Trampoline at the 2007 World championships, earning the US 1st place on the list of reserves for Olympic selection.

The International Federation of Gymnastics announced that the berth was going to be awarded to the US because the IOC’s Tripartite Commission had determined that no National Olympic Committee was eligible to use the Trampoline’s tripartite place. The US also earned an automatic place in the Olympic Women’s Trampoline events thanks to a stellar finish at the Championships.
