Introduction
The Jumpfree Star is distributed online exclusively by Clark & Associates at Jumpright.com. It is manufactured by a Dutch company, Trampolines Europe, which is a major manufacturer in the European market. Overall the star trampoline system is a well made unit. This product arrived in three boxes. It was well packaged and the SE poles arrived preassembled. Overall installation time was about 1.5 hours.
Trampoline
Overall this trampoline has above average quality and construction for its price. The galvanized steel frame is nicely finished and seems to be a mid level quality. The steel weight is was 25% lighter than the high end frames. The bed/mat has 6 rows of perimeter stitching, but did not have a sun guard, so long term durability will be somewhat limited. The springs are 8.5” in length, with a 25.5 mm diameter. Lab testing showed the Star has the firmest bed of all 14’ round trampolines tested to date. User testing confirmed that the bounce was noticeable stiffer and more uncomfortable than competitive products. The pad is nicely constructed but less durable and lighter weight materials, having a third the weight of some high end 14’ trampoline pads. We estimate that the materials that will last only 1 or 2 seasons and the pad is only covered by a 1 year warranty.
Safety Enclosure
The Jumpfree Star safety enclosure was well designed and constructed. The pole foam and sleeves were pre-installed, greatly reducing the installation time. It was easy to complete the pole assembly and install the poles with the large U-bolts. The hardware was very heavy duty and of good quality. The net is attached to each pole at the top and bottom with straps. The straps were easy to install and the finished installation has a very clean appearance. Actual testing showed that the net functions well in absorbing user impact, and keeping the user on the surface of the trampoline. However, we found a problem with undersized bungees located at the bottom of the entry door. During door impact testing in the lab, the bungees, which hold the door together, failed and broke apart. There were some additional problems with access at the doorway. It was difficult to get through the entry door, which requires the user to step over the bungees. This creates a tripping hazard that you should be aware of during use. The net is a small aperture soft fabric that has a very nice feel and is very resistant to sag. It appears to recover nicely after impacts.
Conclusion
Our overall opinion of this product is that it is better than average, but still showed some room for improvement. The trampoline is without major problems. The safety enclosure has both issues and some nice features. We liked the preassembly and the thought that had gone into making this unit easy to install. We are concerned about access and feel that some more work needs to be done to optimize the overlapping entry.
