The freeze and melt cycle and snow weight is very damaging to the trampoline. You need to be careful to not contact the mat with a snow shovel, since any sharp edge can easily tear the mat. A cover will help prevent your snow removal activities from causing this type of damage.
Fit is another important factor in proper weather protection, especially if you have an enclosure to prevent fall-of accidents. Look for a weather cover that fits and secures well around the poles of the enclosure. The presence of a cover will also help discourage unauthorized users from jumping on the trampoline.
