A weather cover should be considered a necessary accessory for anyone wanting to prolong the life of their trampoline. This is especially true if you know you won’t take your trampoline down during the winter months. Since most people do not, let’s take a look at this important accessory.
The primary function of weather cover is UV protection, but an added benefit is that it helps keep your trampoline cleaner by keeping off dirt, tree sap, and leaves. A weather cover can greatly increase the life of the jump surface, pads, and other parts. Look for a cover made of a weather resistant material that will protect against sun damage as well as moisture. Some covers are made of woven polyethylene, but PVC coated polyester is the preferred choice. For example, PVC coated polyester is the same stuff used for outdoor marine covers for boats, commercial awnings and trucks. Being waterproof is not as important as having good drainage, as the trampoline itself is already weather resistant. Standing water can create unnecessary rot, so look for a cover that drains water through the trampoline mat area. By definition, a cover with drainage holes is not “waterproof”. One helpful trick you can use is to place a rubber ball in the center of the trampoline, under the cover. While not necessary, it will give a ‘roof effect’ allowing the water to drain more quickly. This may matter if you live where large downpours occur. If you live in heavy snow country, you must keep the snow off of the trampoline, or take it apart and store it until spring as the weight of snow can destroy the trampoline springs. The freeze and melt cycle and snow weight is very damaging to the trampoline. You need to be careful to not contact the mat with a snow shovel, since any sharp edge can easily tear the mat. A cover will help prevent your snow removal activities from causing this type of damage.
Fit is another important factor in proper weather protection, especially if you have an enclosure to prevent fall-of accidents. Look for a weather cover that fits and secures well around the poles of the enclosure. The presence of a cover will also help discourage unauthorized users from jumping on the trampoline.
Trampolines are one of the very best investments you can make for your family in terms of sheer fun and health for both you and the kids. Using a weather cover will help ensure years of safe and fun use for your family. Get yours today!
